Mocha Vanilla Twists

Mocha Vanilla Twists

Adapted from The Afternoon Tea Collection.

  • 1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee powder
  • 4 ounces butter
  • ½ cup superfine sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons boiling water
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Beat butter, sugar, egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Sift the flour and add to the mixture above. Combine.
  4. The consistency of the batter should be dough-like. Divide the dough into two equal parts.
  5. Combine two teaspoons of water with coffee powder and add to one half of the dough. This is the mocha dough.
  6. Divide the plain dough and the mocha dough into two parts each. Now you have four parts of dough to work with, two plain and two mocha rolls.
  7. Roll each of these four parts in to a long (approximately 16 inch) roll.
  8. Take one mocha roll and one plain roll and twist together. Do the same with the remaining two rolls.
  9. Cut these long intertwined rolls into six or seven parts lengthwise.
  10. Bake them, at least 1 inch apart, for 15 minutes.

These are great with a cup of coffee or tea. Store them in an airtight jar for up to a week. Of course, they will last longer in the refrigerator. I have not tried storing them for longer than a week. If you do, I would love to hear how long these patience testers stay fresh, refrigerated.

* Pop these in a goodie bag for party favors or Christmas for a unique twist.
